Roddy and Libby upgraded Atok Freisians to Holsteins. The milking portion were sold in 2002 to restock a herd in Cumbria after the devastating foot and mouth outbreak.
Atok Border Leicesters were introduced to the farm in 1981, nick naming the first purchases Charlie and Diana.
First Texel purchased was a ram in 1991 to cross with surplus Border Leicesters. However, a few weeks later purchased some females to add diversity to the farm. We now have 160 breeding ewes.
British Blues were added to the Atok herd in 2002 during a visit to Cumbria to see our old milking herd. We sold 2 bulls in the spring show and sale at Carlisle in May 2009.
Atok Classical - £4,500gns.
Atok Chancellor - £5,300gns.
Westbrook Manor
Highfield
The Atok herd of British Friesians was formed after Stephen and Gretta Jones (Roddy's father and mother) were married in 1943 when they took on the tenancy of Westbrook Manor, Dorstone, Herefordshire. A few years later (about 1946-47) the first pedigree cow was purchased. Milk recording was started a few years after that and the odd pedigree cow purchased among a majority of non pedigree. Stephen didn't believe in borrowing money and bought what he could afford. It wasn't until the late 1950's when a cow, named Tarbig Alison 3rd was purchased for 57 gns that the pedigree herd really took off. She had 4 heifer calves at Westbrook and there were no fewer than 34 cows tracing to Alison in 1983.
Roddy and Libby took over the farm and Atok prefix in 1981, when Stephen and Gretta retired, expanding the farm and diversity of animals and moved to Highfield in 2004.
